As the marijuana market expands, it’s going to be even more important that the design on the outside of your packaging is just as high quality as the product inside. Working as a branding and design partner for cannabis brands, we’ve been keeping a close on what’s trending as the market continues to grow. As we continue our top six packaging design trends that we think will take hold in 2019, here is #2, #3 and #4.
#2 Point of Sale Displays Get More Creative.
Picture a world where buying weed is like picking out a nice Cabernet. There are a lot of choices, cool labels and price point makes a difference. Cultivating brand recognition in a dispensary can be done with unique point of sale displays. In 2019, look for more brand-focused displays that offer a glimpse into the quality of the product while also touting the brand attributes. Dispensaries are going to need more visually appealing ways to display products and may lean towards a product line that offers creative point-of-sale solutions.
#3 Reducing Packaging Waste.
The legalization of cannabis has created many benefits for states and consumers, it has also created a somewhat unanticipated problem: packaging waste. Sometimes we have had clients want to create packaging inside of packaging when exploring options for pre-rolls and flowers. We’ve cautioned against these types of options because not only will the printing and production be costly, it also creates more waste than one would expect with a “green” industry. We are really inspired by Colorado based Sana Packaging which is repurposing hemp and other natural materials to create packaging solutions. Their line currently includes options for edibles, concentrates, pre-rolls, vape cartridges, pens, and flowers. We predict that more companies will take this waste-reduction approach to cannabis packaging in 2019.
#4 Cute is Out.
We advise clients that if a packaging design even closely walks the line that it could appeal to children, then don’t do it. When we’ve developed characters or illustrations, we work diligently to make sure they are life-like and not characterized as cute or could be appealing to children in the least bit. As more consumers explore options for their cannabis intake, in 2019 packaging designs will need to reflect the sophistication of today’s cannabis consumer and help to elevate marijuana to be more relevant to today’s diverse audience.
